Former President Goodluck Jonathan is among the notable Nigerians alleged to be lobbying behind the scenes for suspended Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara to return to his office before June 12.
According to insiders, Jonathan has spoken with President Bola Tinubu at least once about the need to reinstate the suspended governor before June 12 in honour of Democracy Day.
The president will address the nation via broadcast on June 12, as tradition dictates.
Tinubu suspended Fubara from office for six months on March 18, but many people criticised the action as unconstitutional because there is no provision in the Constitution that allows the president to suspend/remove an elected governor if emergency rule is declared in any part of the country.
It was hoped that Tinubu would lift the suspension on May 29th, when the country commemorated the second anniversary of his presidency, but that did not happen; therefore, many people are counting on a June 12 reinstatement.
Nigeria will celebrate another Democracy Day four days from now, on June 12, celebrating 26 years of unbroken democratic administration since 1999.
September 18th would make it six months since Ibas took over Rivers State under Tinubu’s decree.
As the president leads the country in commemorating another June 12 anniversary on Thursday, it will be three months next Wednesday, June 18, since Ibas took over as sole administrator of Rivers State, alongside Fubara, the elected governor, outside the Government House in Port Harcourt.
