JUST IN: INEC Announces Date for Peace Accord Signing by Edo Guber Candidates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced that the Peace Accord for the upcoming Edo State Governorship election will take place on Thursday, September 12, 2024, in Benin City. This event marks a significant step towards ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

The signing ceremony, as in previous years, is organized in collaboration with the National Peace Committee (NPC). This year, the event will be presided over by General Abdulsalami Abubakar GCFR, who is the Chairman of the NPC. His role is crucial as the NPC is known for its efforts in promoting peace and stability during elections across Nigeria

.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the announcement during a meeting with leaders of all political parties held in Abuja. Prof. Yakubu highlighted that, unlike in previous elections, the Peace Accord will be signed earlier this year. This adjustment is intended to give the NPC adequate time to monitor how well the political parties and their candidates adhere to their commitments to a peaceful election.

The main goal of this early signing is to ensure that the Edo State Governorship election is conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner. By committing to the Peace Accord, all candidates agree to avoid violence, intimidation, and any form of malpractice throughout the electoral process. This approach aims to foster a more conducive environment for free and fair elections.

The signing of the Peace Accord will follow an important INEC Stakeholders meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday, September 11, 2024, also in Benin City. This prelude meeting will be addressed by the Inspector-General of Police, alongside Prof. Yakubu.

It will serve as a critical platform for political parties, candidates, and other key stakeholders to engage with the Commission and security agencies. The meeting will focus on ensuring that all parties have a clear understanding of the electoral process and the roles they play in maintaining order and security.

Prof. Yakubu has urged all political parties to mobilize their State Chairmen and candidates to actively participate in both the Stakeholders meeting and the Peace Accord signing. Their involvement is crucial for demonstrating their commitment to a peaceful election and for fostering a collaborative atmosphere among all parties involved.

The Edo governorship election is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 21, 2024. This election will be a critical test for the political landscape in the state, and the efforts to ensure peace and order are expected to play a significant role in its success.
