JUST IN: PDP Defies Court Orders, Holds Ward Congress in Rivers State

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) proceeded with its ward congresses in Rivers State, disregarding two court injunctions against the activity.

Party members were observed on Saturday at the PDP Secretariat in Port Harcourt, acquiring materials for the congress, which they claimed were designated for their respective wards. Subsequently, they departed for their individual councils upon receiving the materials.

This development transpired despite two court mandates halting the congress. It should be noted that Justice Charles Wali had restrained the party, its national chairman, and national secretary from conducting ward, local government, and state congresses in Rivers State until the court deliberates on the pending lawsuit.

A similar directive was issued by Justice Sobere Biambo earlier this month.
“An interim order is hereby issued to suspend the PDP congress in Rivers State scheduled for July 27 or any subsequent date or location until the motion on notice is resolved,” the order articulated.

Nevertheless, a Federal High Court in Abuja has countermanded the injunction, permitting the PDP to proceed with its planned activities. The PDP is currently organizing congresses to elect new officials to manage the party’s operations at the ward, local government, and state levels nationwide.

Ward congresses are set to commence on July 27, followed by local government congresses on August 26, and state congresses in September.

The contentious nature of the PDP ward congresses in Rivers State has brought to light the challenges faced by political parties in ensuring compliance with court orders amidst internal party activities. The conflicting rulings from different courts have created a complex legal situation, leading to uncertainty and confusion among party members and observers alike.

As the PDP continues its organizational processes to elect new officials, it is crucial for the party to address the legal implications of defying court orders. The need for transparency, adherence to the rule of law, and respect for judicial decisions is paramount in upholding the integrity of the party and the democratic process.
