Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has announced a new minimum wage of N72,000 for civil servants, effective from November 2024. The decision, which is seen as a significant boost for workers in the state, reflects the governor’s “lifelong commitment to promoting and protecting workers’ rights,” according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Malam Ibraheem Musa. “The decision is in line with the advancement of the interests of workers and improvement in the living conditions of the poor, vulnerable, and underserved in Kaduna State,” the statement emphasized.
In addition to the wage increase, Governor Sani is set to introduce a free transportation scheme for civil servants by deploying 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses. This initiative aims to ease transportation costs for workers, providing them with much-needed relief. “The free transportation scheme, including the release of 100 CNG buses, is designed to alleviate the suffering of workers and enhance their productivity,” Sani noted, underlining the administration’s commitment to supporting civil servants.
The governor elaborated that a Joint Management Committee will oversee the transportation scheme, ensuring efficient operations and accountability. The committee will consist of representatives from organized labour, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), as well as state government officials. “This collaborative effort with labour unions underscores our dedication to ensuring that this initiative is managed transparently and effectively,” he added.
Governor Sani reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to uplifting civil servants and improving the lives of the less privileged across Kaduna State. “Kaduna State Government will continue to fashion and implement policies and measures to bring succor to the people. We are committed to transforming the lives of the less privileged. With the sustained support of our citizens, we shall make Kaduna State a model for social welfare interventions,” he concluded.
