The Kano State Government is set to inaugurate 20 newly constructed public slaughterhouses across the state, valued at N1,550,825,750.95. The facilities, built under the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project, are located in Dawakin Tofa, Kunchi, Bichi, Gezawa, Tudun Wada, Kura, Rano, Bebeji, Wudil, Doguwa, Gabasawa, Gaya, Sumaila, Takai, Kabo, Shanono, Karaye, Kiru, and Gwarzo.
The initiative was jointly funded by the Islamic Development Bank, the Lives and Livelihood Funds, and the state government. Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Kano, KSADP Project Coordinator, Ibrahim Muhammad, said the projects had been completed and urged immediate use to prevent deterioration or vandalism.
He emphasized that the intervention was aimed at ensuring the safety of meat, monitoring animal diseases, and controlling the spread of zoonotic diseases that threaten public health.
The meeting, convened by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Abattoirs, Rabi’u Muhammad, had in attendance traditional heads of butchers, agricultural department representatives from various local government areas, and other stakeholders.
Sarkin Fawar Kano, Alhaji Isyaku Muri, expressed appreciation to the government and funding partners, describing the project as a significant step in modern meat processing.
The Managing Director of the Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority, Dr. Farouk Kurawa, urged butchers to embrace global best practices in meat handling and processing.
