Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has issued a caution to members and supporters of the Labour Party and the Obidient movement regarding their treatment of the party’s former Presidential Campaign Council spokesman, Kenneth Okonkwo, in light of his differing opinions.
Following Okonkwo’s announcement of his resignation from the Labour Party, the party’s leadership characterized him as one of the moles within their midst. Okonkwo officially departed from the Labour Party on Sunday due to the ongoing internal strife and leadership crisis that has been threatening to divide the party.
In response to these events, Obi, who served as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, affirmed that despite Okonkwo’s decision to leave the Labour Party, he remains a trusted ally. Through a series of posts on his social media account on Sunday, the former governor emphasized that Okonkwo’s differing perspective does not make him an adversary, but rather a strong advocate and friend.
Obi stated, “Having read my esteemed colleague Kenneth Okonkwo’s public letter expressing his differing views on the current conflicts within our party, I have witnessed the various reactions to the letter. I wish to clarify that Okonkwo continues to be a dear friend and esteemed ally of mine. I strongly urge against labeling him as a spy or making any disparaging remarks towards him.
“It is imperative to acknowledge and appreciate the unwavering support and loyalty shown by Barrister Kenneth Okonkwo, as his commitment and dedication have been invaluable. Disagreements and varying opinions are intrinsic to any group or societal setting, and it is essential to uphold a level of respect and decorum even amidst dissent. It is pivotal to engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to personal attacks or negativity when faced with differing viewpoints.
“Personally, I place great value on engaging with individuals who offer differing perspectives, as learning and listening are fundamental aspects of effective leadership. Embracing diverse opinions allows for the opportunity to persuade, be persuaded, or consider alternative advice.
“I implore all proponents of a New Nigeria to remain steadfast, resilient, and unwavering in purpose, and to abstain from disparaging or derogatory remarks towards Barrister Kenneth Okonkwo or individuals who may diverge in views, strategies, or approaches. The central tenets of unity, respect, and civility must be upheld, even in times of discord and disagreement.”
