The Kogi State House of Assembly has raised concerns over the growing issue of drug abuse and other social vices affecting the youth in the state. On Friday, Bin Tijani, the representative for Lokoja I State Constituency, moved a motion calling for the establishment of a rehabilitation centre to support victims of drug abuse, sexual violence, and mental health challenges.
Tijani highlighted the severe toll that substance abuse and trauma have taken on the youth, leading to increased mortality in the state.
Addressing the Assembly, Tijani emphasized that drug abuse, rape, and gender-based violence are prevalent in Lokoja and other areas, leaving victims without adequate support.
He noted the lack of a formal rehabilitation centre in Kogi State, which has forced victims to seek help from unqualified caregivers. Tijani pointed out that while the NGO MOHAB has been providing some assistance, its resources are overstretched, and previous appeals for government support have not been fruitful.
The proposed rehabilitation centre, according to Tijani, would provide essential services like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and other mental health treatments to help victims recover from physical and emotional trauma. He added that the centre could also support existing laws on gender-based violence and child protection, contributing to crime reduction efforts in Kogi State.
Deputy Speaker Comfort Egwaba, who presided over the session, endorsed the motion, describing it as timely. She directed the Assembly Clerk to formally communicate the resolution to the state government, urging prompt action to establish the much-needed rehabilitation facility
