The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has officially declared its commitment to participate in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for September 21, 2024. This announcement comes shortly after a high court in Abuja lifted a restraining order that had been placed on the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWAISEC).
The court’s decision was made because the initial order had expired, and such orders can only be effective for a maximum of 14 days.
In a statement issued in Ilorin, PDP spokesman Olusegun Olusola Adewara expressed the party’s respect for the court’s ruling.
He noted that while the PDP is involved in a separate legal challenge concerning the processes of KWAISEC, they are prepared to move forward with the elections. Adewara stated, “We are not trying to prevent the elections; our goal is to ensure they are conducted freely, fairly, and transparently according to all the rules.”
The PDP has been vocal about its intentions to ensure that the local government elections are held in a manner that reflects the will of the people. Adewara emphasized that the party is determined to compete in the elections with the full confidence that the citizens of Kwara support them. He acknowledged, however, that there are concerning reports regarding the ruling party’s possible intentions to manipulate the electoral process.
According to Adewara, there have been alarming allegations about the ruling party planning to write results before the elections and potentially block the delivery of election materials to certain polling units. He also mentioned rumors that pre-marked ballot papers might be used to skew the results on election day. These claims raise serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process in Kwara State.
In light of these issues, the PDP has called on security agencies to increase their vigilance and monitor KWAISEC closely as the elections draw near. Adewara stressed that “the integrity of our electoral system must not be compromised by those in power who wish to undermine democracy.” He urged citizens to remain aware and alert to any attempts at manipulation.
Despite the low level of trust in KWAISEC’s integrity, Adewara encouraged all well-meaning citizens to participate in the elections. “It is crucial for the people to come out in large numbers to exercise their right to vote and to stand firm by their choices,” he said. The PDP believes that active participation by the electorate is essential for a truly democratic process.
