The removal of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has ignited a firestorm of controversy within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos. Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2025, by a majority of lawmakers over alleged misconduct and financial misappropriation, has sparked conflicting reactions among party members.
The division within the APC became apparent when two members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Senator Anthony Adefuye and Chief Muraina Taiwo, opposed Obasa’s removal. However, their comments were criticized by another GAC member, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, who described them as “childish and inconsequential.” This public disagreement highlights the deepening rift within the party.
As the APC struggles to contain the fallout from Obasa’s removal, opposition parties in Lagos are sensing an opportunity to capitalize on the crisis. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party have both expressed willingness to welcome Obasa into their fold, should he decide to leave the APC. The PDP Vice Chairman, Benedict Tai, noted that the party would implement checks and balances if Obasa joins them, to ensure he doesn’t disrupt the party.
The Labour Party Chairman, Pastor Dayo Ekong, also stated that Obasa would be welcomed into the party, provided his interests align with the party’s vision and principles. However, Ekong emphasized that Obasa would not receive preferential treatment due to his political status and rumored governorship ambition.
