Lagos Assembly Calls for Governors to Embrace Legislature as Crucial Partners

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday urged governors in Nigeria to refrain from viewing state legislatures as mere extensions of the executive branch, but rather as essential partners in the advancement and growth of states.
The House, recognizing the legislature as the cornerstone of democracy, also called upon the National Assembly to criminalize any actions that undermine the autonomy of the parliament.
In a press release by Eromosele Ebhomele, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, it was stated that the House adopted these resolutions in observance of the 2024 edition of the International Day of Parliamentarism, celebrated on June 30.

Furthermore, the House implored Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to acknowledge former speakers of the Lagos Assembly for their contributions to the state’s progress and advancement.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa underscored the importance of honoring past speakers who have dedicated their service to the state’s development.
Dr. Obasa emphasized that democracy cannot exist without the parliament. He highlighted the vital role of the institution in governance through legislation, motions, and resolutions.
He characterized the International Day of Parliamentarism as an occasion to “raise awareness among Nigerians about the significance of the legislature.”

In extending congratulations to parliamentarians nationwide for their contributions to the nation’s growth, Obasa stressed: “It is crucial to recognize that a government comprises three branches, and without one, there is no government.”
“Since its establishment in 1979 under Alhaji Lateef Jakande, none of the former speakers of this House have been commemorated,” Dr. Obasa remarked.
“We should celebrate those who have represented us admirably and convey to the National Assembly the necessity of enabling Houses of Assembly to operate in accordance with the constitution effectively and with the required support.
“Governors should also demonstrate the political resolve to empower the parliament to carry out its duties as stipulated in the constitution,” Dr. Obasa added.

Other lawmakers who contributed voiced their support for celebrating the parliament and commended Speaker Obasa’s leadership.
Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, representing Eti-Osa constituency 2, emphasized the indispensable role of parliament.
“Democracy revolves around the parliament. It serves as a vital link between the people and the government, yet our role as representatives of the people is sometimes undervalued. There should be no disconnect between the parliament and the people. No form of government can function without a parliament,” he stated.
Hon. Desmond Elliot (Surulere) pointed out that nothing transpires within a state without the parliament’s involvement, while Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh described parliamentarians as essential agents of stability in the political system who merit recognition.
Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu urged the House to consider joining the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
