The Lagos State House of Assembly has strongly condemned an attempt by former Speaker Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa to convene a plenary session without meeting the necessary procedural requirements.
In a statement issued by Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, the Assembly described the move as a blatant violation of legislative rules.
Ogundipe clarified that for any plenary session to be valid, it must be officially notified, meet the quorum requirement, have an approved agenda, and include the mace as a symbol of legislative authority. None of these conditions were met, as only five out of forty members were present at the purported session, rendering it unconstitutional and without legal effect.
The lawmakers reaffirmed their support for the current Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, and dismissed any rumors regarding her resignation. According to the statement, Meranda enjoys the confidence of 36 out of 40 legislators, and the House remains committed to upholding democratic governance and party unity under the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Assembly urged the public to disregard misinformation and assured Lagosians that the legislative body remains dedicated to its constitutional duties and the development of the state.
