The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to prioritise the completion of abandoned road projects across the state. The lawmakers made the call during a plenary session, citing the deplorable state of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road in Igbogbo Bayeku, Ikorodu.
Hon. Aro Moshood (Ikorodu 2) raised the motion under ‘Matter of Urgent Importance,’ calling on the Governor to direct contractors to resume work immediately. He also recommended that government agencies provide 60% of the required funds to contractors and ensure their security to facilitate prompt project completion.
Moshood noted that the road, which was awarded in 2017, has been abandoned, posing dangers to residents and making the area prone to robberies. He described the situation as a source of distress, posing serious security and socio-economic challenges to the people.
Supporting the motion, Hon. Sa’ad Olumo (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1) observed that the Lagos State government had allocated sufficient budgetary provisions for road projects. He noted, however, that contractors have been citing rising material costs as a reason for abandoning the projects.
Deputy Majority Leader, Adedamola Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja 2), emphasised that the issue of abandoned road projects extends beyond Ikorodu. He called on the House to summon all relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, to provide explanations for the abandoned roads.
Hon. Abiodun Tobun proposed enacting a law to mandate all administrations to complete projects initiated by their predecessors. This, he argued, would prevent cases of uncompleted projects and ensure that the state’s resources are utilised efficiently.
Other lawmakers, including Hon. Ganiyu Okanlawon (Kosofe I), emphasised the need for strict measures against contractors who fail to deliver. They demanded that all contractors handling abandoned projects be summoned to account for their failures.
