The Lagos State Safety Commission has begun an investigation into the death of a civil engineer, Olalekan Oloruntoba, who reportedly died in a crane accident at a construction site. The commission’s spokesperson, Adewunmi Okoh, confirmed the inquiry, emphasising the commission’s commitment to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident. The accident occurred on September 23, with witnesses reporting that Oloruntoba, known affectionately as “Oloriebi,” was assisting with crane operations when the equipment malfunctioned.
Sources at the site revealed that Oloruntoba was trying to control the crane, which had hooked while lifting heavy materials. As he struggled to regain control, the crane collapsed, fatally injuring him. Witnesses recounted that Oloruntoba attempted to escape as the situation escalated but was unable to move away in time. Colleagues noted that he was a civil engineering graduate from Kwara State University and Kwara State Polytechnic and had previously interned with the construction firm before joining as a contract staff member.
Friends and colleagues expressed their grief on social media, honouring Oloruntoba as a dedicated and passionate engineer. Adeyemi Adetoyese, a close associate, shared an emotional tribute, stating, “Good night, Lekan Oloriebi. We love you, but Jesus loves you more.” Another friend, Temitope Abdulwasiu, remembered Oloruntoba for his humility and dedication, while Sani Abubakar highlighted his friend’s commitment to professional growth and future aspirations.
The Lagos State Safety Commission assured the public of a thorough investigation, with Okoh urging patience as they gather information. “We will investigate and provide feedback. Just be patient with us; you know this is the weekend, and we can only gather the necessary information during the week,” she stated.
