The Nasarawa State Local Government Law 2024, which was just approved by the State House of Assembly, was signed by Governor Abdullahi Sule. Governor Sule stated that signing the law marks a significant milestone towards effective and efficient operations at the third tier of government.
The governor thanked the Nasarawa State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, and the State Assembly members for enacting the law as he signed it into law today in Government House Lafia.
Sule also praised other interested parties for their constructive contributions to the implementation of the new local government law.
According to the governor, the law’s signature is an important step towards the third tier of government’s successful and efficient operations.
Considering the Supreme Court’s ruling giving local government units nationwide financial autonomy, the Governor affirmed the elimination of the local government joint account system as a step towards fostering accountability and openness.
The governor clarified that the law also calls for the creation of Area Administrative Councils, which would be financed by the state government and selected by the state governor after being reviewed by the state assembly.
He added that everything is ready for the Nasarawa State Economic Council to be established. The bill was signed into law on October 31, 2024, according to State Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau.
According to Rt. Hon. Jatau, the measure was completed in compliance with the Supreme Court’s verdict on local government autonomy and passed the state assembly’s necessary procedures.
After highlighting the provisions of the Supreme Court’s decision on local government autonomy, State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Barrister Labaran Magaji previously explained that the law underwent stringent procedures to guarantee inclusivity and was deemed appropriate for Governor Abdullahi Sule’s assent.
