The newly appointed coach of the Super Eagles, Finidi George, expressed that the wind-down of the 2023–2024 European Football season is an opportune time for Nigerian players across various leagues in the continent.
George conveyed this sentiment during a press conference, where he commended the achievements of Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman with Atlanta FC. Lookman secured victory in the 2023–2024 Europa League on Wednesday.
The media briefing was hosted by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) at the Eko Hotels and Suite, Victoria Island, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The Super Eagles coach expressed his joy at Lookman’s remarkable performance for Atlanta FC in Italy, culminating in a 3-0 triumph over Bayern Leverkusen in the Europa League final. Lookman’s impressive hat trick sealed the victory.
“As a Nigerian, I am elated to witness our players excelling and making a mark in Europe. This period represents a peak time for Nigerian players in Europe,” George stated. “Ademola is a player of great importance to us, and I am thrilled by his outstanding display.”
He further added, “I extended my congratulations to him, as well as to Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella. It is a positive development for Nigeria to see our players thriving in Europe after a prolonged period of absence. As a coach, this is a gratifying experience for me. We eagerly anticipate the return of these players to represent us at a higher level.”
Looking ahead to the crucial World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic, George expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to secure maximum points.
“The World Cup qualifiers against South Africa will pose a challenge. We are all aware of the previous AFCON encounters. We acknowledge the capabilities of the South African team,” he acknowledged. “Although most South African players compete domestically, if our players replicate their club performances and give their all, we are well-equipped for success.”
George emphasized the need for luck and efficient conversion of scoring opportunities. He also hinted at the inclusion of two or three new players in the team, while emphasizing that the core of the squad would consist of players from the previous AFCON.
“Club form does not always translate to national team success. We intend to introduce fresh talent from Europe, who have demonstrated exceptional performances,” George explained. “During FIFA windows for friendly matches, we will provide these players with an opportunity to integrate with the existing squad. This blend of experience and new faces will be crucial for our future endeavors.”
In conclusion, George disclosed plans to unveil the Super Eagles’ roster for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic before Saturday.
