Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved the appointment of 45 Permanent Secretaries and three Executive Secretaries across various sectors of the state. This significant decision was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, in a statement on Friday.
According to a document signed by the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, the appointments cover diverse areas, including 16 Permanent Secretaries in the civil service mainstream, six in the health sector, seven in the local government sector, and one each for the House of Assembly and Surveyor General’s office. Additionally, nine Tutors General and six Inspectors General of Education were appointed to enhance educational administration.
The new appointments mark a departure from the traditional practice, as Governor Makinde allocated a higher number of Permanent Secretaries to the local government sector, emphasizing inclusivity and decentralization. “This is a clear break from the norm where the civil service mainstream enjoyed a near-monopoly of such appointments,” Oyelade stated.
Furthermore, the health sector will now have zonal Permanent Secretaries instead of conventional Heads of Hospitals, while the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) will operate with zonal Executive Secretaries to ensure localized and effective administration.
The Commissioner also highlighted Governor Makinde’s commitment to workers’ welfare, noting that over 23,000 employees have been recruited into the state workforce. He revealed that ₦143 billion will be spent annually on workers’ salaries, reinforcing Oyo State’s position as a leader in employee welfare across Nigeria.
