Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has dismissed accusations of land grabbing tied to the ongoing Circular Road project and other developmental initiatives across the state. Addressing journalists in Ibadan, the governor attributed the allegations to misinformation and insisted his administration is focused on sustainable development.
Speaking on the matter, Makinde stated, “Some people are describing me as a land grabber. I am not a land grabber. Ironically, it is the land grabbers who are accusing me.” He clarified that the Circular Road project, envisioned as Nigeria’s first motorway, is designed to open up areas for economic growth, with specific corridors ensuring a structured and impactful development approach.
Makinde underscored the uniqueness of the Circular Road, explaining that it is not a conventional urban road but a motorway with limited exit points, enhancing its strategic significance. He emphasized the progress made under his administration, citing improved budget performance as a catalyst for the state’s steady development trajectory since 2019.
The governor also addressed misconceptions about the controversial Tax Reform Bill, highlighting the importance of stakeholder consultations before advancing the bill. “At the National Economic Council meeting, we resolved unanimously to withdraw the bill from the National Assembly to allow for wider consultations. This ensures that any reforms align with the interests of all stakeholders,” he noted.
Makinde concluded by urging critics to focus on the substance of his administration’s policies rather than personal attacks. He reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and development, stating that his actions are guided by the best interests of Oyo State and its people.
