Governor Seyi Makinde has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring justice for the victims of the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which claimed 35 lives. Speaking at the 2025 Annual Inter-faith Service for state workers on Monday, Makinde stated that all suspects connected to the incident must face trial, emphasizing that Oyo State will uphold the rule of law irrespective of pressures for leniency.
The governor addressed comparisons to similar incidents in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where no prosecutions occurred. “Oyo State is not Anambra State,” he declared, adding that accountability must be ensured. While acknowledging the judiciary’s role in granting bail, he insisted that the suspects must stand trial to bring closure to the tragedy.
Makinde also used the platform to highlight his administration’s continued focus on tackling security challenges in the state, particularly bandit incursions from northwestern regions. He praised security operatives for their dedication and called for collective vigilance from citizens to report suspicious activities.
On workers’ welfare, the governor assured that discussions on pension adjustments in line with the new minimum wage would be concluded within the week. He reaffirmed his commitment to improving worker benefits and maintaining a secure environment for progress in Oyo State.
