Italian transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano has emphasized that AC Milan has a significant lead over Manchester United and other clubs in the pursuit of former Netherlands U21 international Joshua Zirkzee, who has Nigerian heritage.
The rising star from Bologna has garnered a reputation as one of the most promising young talents worldwide following an exceptional season where he contributed to 19 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions.
Zirkzee received a last-minute call-up to the Netherlands squad for the 2024 European Championship, commencing in Germany today. His participation in the tournament would solidify his allegiance to his country of birth.
AC Milan has been diligently negotiating a deal to secure the services of the Dutch-Nigerian forward for the past six months, giving them an edge over other suitors due to Zirkzee’s strong desire to join the seven-time European champions.

In a statement on his YouTube channel, Romano stated: “I want to clarify the situation regarding Joshua Zirkzee. AC Milan are currently in pole position to sign the Dutch striker.
“AC Milan initiated discussions on this transfer towards the end of 2023, which has given them a strategic advantage. They have been meticulously planning since January, February, and March, laying the groundwork for the potential move. An agreement on the player’s salary is almost finalized.
“Recently, AC Milan informed Bologna of their intention to activate the buy option clause for Joshua Zirkzee, which stands at 40 million euros and is applicable to all clubs globally, not limited to Bayern Munich or Italian clubs.”

Meanwhile, Benjamin Šeško, another highly sought-after forward by top Premier League teams, has committed his future to RB Leipzig, eliminating him as an option for Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal. This development underscores the urgency for AC Milan to conclude negotiations for Zirkzee, a product of the Bayern Munich academy.
Romano further elaborated: “AC Milan must swiftly seal the deal to avoid the risk of rival clubs, such as Manchester United, expressing interest in Zirkzee.
“Given Šeško’s unavailability, a player previously targeted by Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal, these clubs are now exploring alternative options. For instance, Chelsea is considering Jhon Durán, while Manchester United is eyeing Joshua Zirkzee.
“AC Milan is optimistic about finalizing the transfer promptly to prevent any complications. They have managed the Zirkzee situation admirably.
“In the meantime, Manchester United is closely monitoring the Zirkzee situation more than other clubs at present.”
