Argentina’s national football team triumphed in a spectacular fashion during the Conmebol 2024 Copa America semi-final clash against Canada at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on July 9, 2024. The match was a showcase of Argentina’s dominance, highlighted by their 2-0 victory over Canada, setting the stage for their quest for a historic third consecutive major title.
Led by the iconic Lionel Messi, Argentina, defending champions of the Copa America, delivered an outstanding performance in front of a capacity crowd of 82,500 spectators. Their form mirrored their successful campaign in the 2022 World Cup, suggesting they are hitting peak form at a critical juncture.

Reflecting on the team’s achievement, Messi expressed his admiration for Argentina’s resilience and determination, drawing parallels with their previous Copa America and World Cup campaigns. At 37 years old, Messi emphasized the significance of competing in another final and relished every moment of the journey.
Canada, making their debut in the Copa America tournament, earned praise for their commendable run to the semi-finals. However, they faced a formidable challenge against Argentina’s seasoned squad. Coach Marsch acknowledged that fatigue played a role in their performance, particularly noticeable in the second half.

The match began with promising opportunities for Canada, including an early chance for Jacob Shaffelburg. Despite these efforts, Argentina gradually took control of the game. Rodrigo De Paul’s strategic play in the 22nd minute set up Julian Alvarez for the opening goal, demonstrating Argentina’s tactical prowess and ability to capitalize on key moments.
Throughout the game, Argentina’s attacking trio of Angel Di Maria, Lionel Messi, and Rodrigo De Paul posed constant threats to Canada’s defense. Di Maria’s experience and vision were evident in his contributions, including a near miss that showcased Argentina’s intent to dominate.

The second half saw Argentina extend their lead through Messi, who clinically finished Enzo Fernandez’s well-placed pass. The goal provided Argentina with a comfortable cushion, allowing them to manage the game effectively and conserve energy for the final stages.
As the match drew to a close, Canada made a late push, with substitute Tani Oluwaseyi testing Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. However, Argentina’s defensive resolve ensured they secured a comprehensive victory, moving one step closer to their goal of a record 16th Copa America triumph.
Looking ahead, Argentina awaits the outcome of the Uruguay vs. Colombia semi-final to determine their opponent in the highly anticipated Copa America final in Miami. Under the guidance of coach Lionel Scaloni, Argentina’s disciplined yet creative style of play promises an exciting finale as they aim to etch their name in football history once again.
