Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State marked the New Year with a gesture of compassion, granting clemency to 11 inmates across various correctional centres in the state. The announcement was made during his New Year State Broadcast in Jos on Wednesday.
The governor stated that the pardon was in accordance with the powers conferred upon him under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and based on the recommendations of the Plateau State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
“After consulting with the State Advisory Council, I exercised my power of prerogative of mercy on 11 inmates,” Mutfwang said. Among the beneficiaries, one received an absolute pardon, while the fines for the remaining 10 were paid by the government.
The decision to grant clemency was based on the remorse demonstrated by the inmates, as noted by the Advisory Council. The governor emphasised that the move aligns with his administration’s commitment to fostering justice with a touch of humanity.
Mutfwang’s act of mercy reflects his vision for more inclusive and compassionate governance in Plateau State. He urged the beneficiaries to use this second chance to reintegrate into society as productive and law-abiding citizens.
