The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has firmly denied approving Lung Detox Tea or Lungitox (Smokers Pride), an herbal product falsely claiming it can make smoking safe. In a statement on Sunday, the agency condemned the misleading claims circulating on social media, describing them as dangerous to public health.

NAFDAC’s Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, clarified that the product’s promoters had applied for registration but were denied because the scientific efficacy and safety of their claims could not be substantiated. The agency categorically stated that the product is not registered and urged Nigerians to disregard the promotional video circulating online.

“The attention of NAFDAC has been drawn to a misleading video alleging that we approved the registration of a product claiming smoking can be made safe when used. This claim is false and unfounded,” the statement read. The agency emphasized its scientific rigor, stating that it would never endorse any product with baseless therapeutic claims. According to NAFDAC, herbal products must undergo proper clinical trials and provide scientifically validated evidence before being approved.

The agency reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring that only safe and effective products are allowed into the market. The agency also warned the public against being deceived by such products and urged them to report suspicious claims or items through NAFDAC’s official channels. It condemned attempts to endanger lives with false health claims and promised to take decisive action against perpetrators.
