Socialite E-Money has landed in the net of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on suspicion of Naira abuse, while there were also allegations speculation of money laundering
The anti-graft agency in Lagos State’s Omole neighbourhood detained him.
The anti-graft agency reportedly detained E-Money, whose true name is Emeka Okonkwo, in Lagos State’s Omole neighbourhood. E-Money is currently in the custody of the EFCC in Abuja
.
Although the details of the incident are still unknown, he was seen at a public event and was allegedly observed spraying naira and several US dollar bills.
It was alleged that the Chief Executive Officer of Five Star Music and Emmy Cargoes Nigeria Limited had broken Nigeria’s Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act.
However, as of the time this article was published, the EFCC had not yet released an official statement regarding his arrest.
In the EFCC’s fight against naira abuse, this arrest is the latest. A singer named Terry Apala was put on remand a few days ago on suspicion of embezzling the country’s cash.
Aisha Achimugu, another socialite, has been arrested by the EFCC. At Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, she was taken into custody.
Shortly after her return from London, Achimugu was apprehended on Tuesday at around five in the morning.
She was listed as sought by the anti-graft agency in March on charges of money laundering and criminal conspiracy.
Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), Achimugu’s attorney, also verified her detention, stating, “Aisha Achimugu, who entered the country willingly from London, was arrested by the EFCC around 5 a.m. on Tuesday.”
Ojukwu blasted the EFCC’s move, calling it a breach of a court order.
“In light of what transpired in court on Monday, my client returned based on the undertaking before the court to honour the EFCC’s invitation but was arrested at the airport,” Ojukwu said.
He disclosed that Achimugu had commenced a hunger strike to protest what he termed a breach of her fundamental rights.
“She is a prisoner of conscience,” the lawyer said.
The arrest comes a day after Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ordered her to appear before the EFCC and the court.
