Wilfred Ndidi, the talented midfielder from the Super Eagles, has been presented as an option to Celtic, the reigning champions of the Scottish League, following the expiration of his contract with Leicester City, Umpire Sports report.
At 27-year old, Ndidi is currently a free agent after parting ways with Leicester City at the conclusion of the previous month, expressing a strong desire to reunite with Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.
Ndidi experienced the peak of his professional career under Rodgers’ guidance, achieving success by securing the FA Cup and Community Shield under the management of the former Liverpool boss in 2021, and later clinching the EFL Championships with Enzo Maresca in the recently concluded season.
It is reported that Celtic were informed last night about Ndidi’s interest in joining Parkhead, with the allure of playing in the UEFA Champions League proving attractive to the former Genk midfielder.
During the previous season, Brendan Rodgers spoke highly of Ndidi, hinting that the midfielder would be an ideal addition to his tactical setup. Should further discussions take place, this possibility could materialize.
“He possesses exceptional athletic abilities and is an industrious worker. I always seek to have a commanding presence in my team, whether it be a defensive midfielder like him who excels in pressing and distribution, or a creative playmaker operating from deep. His skill set is remarkable, and he has left a strong impression. His speed in covering ground is remarkable. His ability to anticipate plays is impressive, as he reads the game well and identifies potential threats. Having such a player is crucial,” remarked the 51-year-old coach in 2023, as disclosed by The Scottish Sun.
Nonetheless, Celtic may encounter financial constraints in meeting the salary demands of the Nigerian midfielder. A potential solution could arise if Matthew O’Riley’s proposed £30 million transfer to Southampton materializes, thereby freeing up funds to accommodate Ndidi.
Ndidi featured in Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Benin Republic and South Africa, although he was unable to guide the three-time AFCON champions to victory.
