The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Tuesday granted six states the power to regulate their electricity markets.
In a statement posted on Twitter, the commission granted the power to Enugu, Ekiti, Ondo, Imo, Oyo, and Edo states to regulate their electricity markets.
NERC confirmed that the states will establish electricity regulatory authorities and henceforth oversee the electricity markets within their jurisdiction.
In a statement, NERC said, “This regulatory measure can be referred to as the Order of Transfer of Regulatory Oversight of the Electricity Market in Oyo, Enugu, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Ekiti States ‘from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC or the Commission)’ to the States Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC).”
The statement said, “These six states are now authorized to regulate their electricity markets following the transfer of authority from NERC, having established their electricity regulatory bodies.”

NERC announced in April that it would relinquish regulatory oversight over the state governments of Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, and Ondo effective May 1, 2024.
