The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has imposed hefty fines on several electricity distribution companies, including Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Ikeja Disco, Benin, Eko, and others, for overbilling customers.
Breakdown of Fines:
AEDC: N1.69 billion
Ikeja Disco: N1.4 billion
Benin Distribution Company: N804 million
Enugu Distribution Company: N310 million
Eko Distribution Company: N1.41 billion
Ibadan Distribution: N15 million
NERC’s investigation revealed that these distribution companies overcharged customers between January and September 2023. The fines, which represent 10% of the overbilled amount, aim to hold the companies accountable for their billing practices.
AEDC’s annual operating expenditure will be reduced by N1.69 billion, effective from September.
The fines are part of NERC’s September 2024 Supplementary Order, signed by Vice Chairman Musiliu Oseni and Commissioner for Legal, Licensing, and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye.
This move demonstrates NERC’s commitment to protecting consumers’ interests and ensuring transparency in the electricity distribution sector.
