The Nigeria Football Federation will host an unveiling ceremony in Abuja today to officially introduce Mr. Finidi George as the new Head Coach of the Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles. The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, along with the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Tinuke Watti, President of NFF Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and the NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, are among the distinguished individuals expected to attend the unveiling.
George declined an opportunity to coach a lower-tier team in Spain to return to Nigeria and lead two-time CAF Champions League winner, Enyimba FC. He clinched the challenging Nigeria elite division title with the People’s Elephant in his second season and has left the club with a chance of defending the title this season, with six matches remaining. Upon George’s recent departure from the Aba giants, Enyimba FC maintained their position in third place on the NPFL log, accumulating 53 points from 32 matches.
They lagged behind table-toppers Enugu Rangers by four points and were three points adrift of second-placed Remo Stars.
The 52-year-old served as an assistant to Portuguese José Peseiro for 20 months starting from the summer of 2022, during which the Super Eagles secured qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and reached the final in Cote d’Ivoire three months ago.
As a player, Finidi George earned 62 caps for Nigeria at the senior level. He achieved gold, silver, and bronze in the Africa Cup of Nations and participated in two FIFA World Cup tournaments.
He faces the immediate challenge of securing maximum points in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa (at home) and Benin Republic (away) in the coming weeks.
