Blessing, a Nigerian, and Jake, an American, have shared their remarkable story of love and faith, overcoming cultural resistance to marry despite family opposition. In a Sunday interview on Femi Lazarus’s YouTube show Stories, the couple revealed how they wed in Nigeria without any family members present. Blessing, who had a difficult childhood under her stepmother’s care, recalled her traumatic experiences growing up in a strict, abusive household.
Despite these challenges, Jake, a missionary at the time, connected with Blessing through a Christian discipleship program. After five months of long-distance communication, Jake knew they were meant to be together. However, the couple faced significant opposition from Blessing’s family, including accusations that Jake was an organ harvester. The situation worsened to the point where Blessing frequently fell ill due to stress.
The couple decided to forgo a traditional Nigerian wedding, instead choosing a simple church ceremony with fewer than 20 guests. Jake paid Blessing’s bride price to her mother, opting not to engage with her estranged father. Their decision, guided by faith, was a reflection of their shared belief that their union served a greater divine purpose.
Despite the trials, both Blessing and Jake remain confident in their calling. Reflecting on their journey, Blessing described how God’s love and Jake’s support have been instrumental in her healing. The couple now lives in Abuja, where they continue to pursue their shared mission, believing that their marriage is part of something greater than themselves.
