In spite of winning four Rookie of the Month Awards, new information has surfaced regarding Victor Boniface, the talented player for Super Eagles, missing out on the title of Bundesliga Player of the Season.
Boniface is having an exceptional season in the Bundesliga, leading as Leverkusen’s top scorer with 21 goals and 10 assists in 33 games.
Nevertheless, the Nigerian lost the prestigious German football award to his Bayer Leverkusen colleague, Florian Wirtz, for his contributions to Leverkusen’s outstanding Bundesliga season. Wirtz, who played 32 games this season, scored 11 goals and provided 11 assists. His consistent performance earned him the Bundesliga Player of the Month recognition three times.
Just like the requirements for the Rookie of the Month Award, players needed to have received the Player of the Month honor to qualify for the season award.
This competition included Stuttgart duo Sehrou Guirassy and Deniz Undav, as well as teammates Alejandro Grimaldo and Boniface, whom Wirtz surpassed to win the award. With Wirtz’s victory, Leverkusen achieved both the Bundesliga Player of the Season and Rookie of the Season titles after Boniface recently won the latter.
In the meantime, Boniface might be nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or due to his impressive performance this season. Remember, Victor Osimhen was ranked 8th in the 2023 Ballon d’Or ceremony held in Paris, France.
Nevertheless, Leverkusen isn’t slowing down. This Wednesday, the team has the opportunity to win the Europa League as they face Atalanta in Dublin. Following that, next Saturday, they will play against Kaiserslautern in the DFB-Pokal final in Berlin, aiming for a potential undefeated treble.
