The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has come forward to vigorously refute claims circulating online that its petrol, sourced from the Dangote refinery, is of substandard quality. These allegations, spread through a viral video, claimed that NNPC’s fuel has a high burn rate, causing it to run out quickly.
The statement from NNPCL emphasized that the video, which purported to demonstrate the inferior performance of NNPC fuel by comparing it with Dangote petrol, was both misleading and baseless.
In the viral video, the content creator conducted an experiment using petrol from both MRS and NNPC filling stations in Lagos, finding that fuel from NNPC-powered generators lasted significantly less time than the one powered by Dangote petrol.
The content creator alleged that the fuel from NNPC was of poor quality, claiming it stopped after only 17 minutes of use. However, NNPCL has strongly denied these claims, pointing out that the fuel sold at its stations is sourced from the Dangote refinery, known for its strict adherence to industry standards.
The company reiterated that the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) available at NNPC retail outlets in Lagos meets global quality standards, ensuring consumers benefit from optimal efficiency and environmental sustainability. NNPCL’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, highlighted that the claims of substandard fuel were based on “unverified and amateur research” that lacked any professional oversight. He went further to label the accusations as a deliberate attempt by economic saboteurs to undermine the company’s reputation and sow distrust among the public.
NNPCL’s press release further emphasized that a significant portion of the Premium Motor Spirit sold in Lagos comes from the Dangote Refinery, a crucial strategic partner in ensuring energy security and promoting local production. The Dangote Refinery is recognized for maintaining high quality standards, contributing to the overall integrity of the fuel distributed by NNPC stations across the region.
NNPCL also assured consumers that their fuel is designed with one of the best compositions, ensuring durability and reliable performance.
In response to the spread of misinformation, NNPCL vowed to take legal action against any individuals or groups found deliberately circulating falsehoods that could harm its operations. The company urged the public to disregard the deceptive video and rely on verified, credible sources for their information. NNPCL made it clear that such defamatory activities would not be tolerated, and those responsible would be held accountable to the full extent of the law.
The company concluded its statement by reaffirming its commitment to ensuring fuel availability, affordability, and quality across Nigeria. It stressed that its mission remains focused on meeting global industry standards and serving the needs of Nigerian consumers.
