The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of
emergency in Rivers State. According to the party’s national chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, the decision was taken in the
best interest of the residents of the state.
Major stated that no responsible government would allow a situation to deteriorate before taking decisive action. He
emphasized that the primary responsibility of government is to protect the lives and property of its citizens.
The NNPP chairman noted that the security situation in Rivers State had become unacceptable, posing a threat to the
lives and property of the majority of residents. He commended President Tinubu for taking a tough decision, saying
that true leadership requires making difficult choices.
Major also cautioned Nigerian leaders to be mindful of their statements, warning that their comments could escalate
the situation in Rivers State and have nationwide repercussions.

The NNPP chairman expressed hope that the state of emergency would be a temporary measure, lasting no more
than six months. He urged the people of Rivers State to be streetwise and disregard those with personal interests
who are crying foul.
Major’s comments come amid widespread criticism of President Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in
Rivers State. Several opposition parties and stakeholders have condemned the move, describing it as
unconstitutional and reckless.
However, the NNPP chairman argued that the president’s decision was informed by the information available to him,
which may not be in the public domain. He emphasized that the government must have had more information on the crisis than what is available in the media.
