The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is saying there is no cause for alarm despite what it described as a controversial invitation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This was stated in a post on the official Facebook page of the PDP, signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, and dated February 5, 2026.
In the statement, the PDP said INEC invited leaders of political parties to a meeting and also extended the invitation to “some former members of our party who are claiming to head a so-called National Caretaker Committee.”
According to the party, “there is no such provision in our constitution for such a committee to represent the PDP.”
The party described the move as troubling and potentially tension-inducing but insisted it would respond through lawful means.
It added that INEC, as an umpire, ought to have exercised restraint because the leadership dispute is already before the Court of Appeal.
The statement said INEC should have taken note of “the pendency of the matters in the Court of Appeal (including the judgment which they are relying upon), which when decided, will effectively affect the subject under consideration.”
The PDP pointed that the electoral body has no power to decide who leads the party.
“We can assure that INEC will not choose a leadership for our party,” the statement said.
The opposition party also urged its members nationwide to remain calm while the legal process continues.
“Consequently, we urge all our members to remain calm and hopeful that soonest the Court of Appeal will hear and determine all the cases concerning the leadership of our party,” it stated.
