Governor Josh Stein has officially declared June 14, 2025, as Igbo Day in North Carolina to honour Nigerian heritage.
This historic proclamation recognises the deep-rooted contributions of the Igbo community to North Carolina’s cultural development.
According to the governor, Igbo Day in North Carolina celebrates decades of educational, medical, and technological excellence from Igbos.
The event honours those who migrated from Nigeria, many of whom have lived in the state for over fifty years.

He stated that the Igbo community has made meaningful economic, social, and philanthropic contributions across several cities and counties.
Governor Stein praised the Igbo people’s achievements in law, medicine, entrepreneurship, education, and community service across the state.
He also recognised their strong civic involvement, particularly in volunteering, food drives, hospital visits, and cultural performances.

Reasons for Igbo Celebration in North Carolina

The 2025 Igbo Day in North Carolina is backed by the nonprofit Igbo Day Festival Organisation, founded in 2022.
The organisation aims to educate the public on Igbo culture through music, art, language, and traditional values.
Their annual festival helps instil pride and identity in younger generations of Igbos living in the United States.

Stein acknowledged their effort in preserving Nigerian traditions while contributing positively to modern American society.
He encouraged residents to join the celebration and learn about the culture, history, and resilience of the Igbo people.
The Igbo community’s impact extends beyond cultural showcases to include high achievements in public and private sector employment.
Their story is one of perseverance, unity, and pride in both Nigerian heritage and American democratic ideals.
Governor Stein’s proclamation reinforces that diversity remains a strength and cultural inclusion benefits every North Carolinian.

The state will now observe Igbo Day in North Carolina annually, encouraging reflection, appreciation, and unity among communities.
This observance serves as a reminder of the positive role immigrant communities play in enriching American life.
It also encourages North Carolinians to explore Nigerian culture—see our travel guides for Nigeria for more insights.
