The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) recently held its 14th convocation ceremony, where two distinguished individuals, Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen and African Development Bank Group President Akinwumi Adesina, were awarded honorary doctorate degrees.
Abbas Tajudeen received the Honorary Doctorate Degree of Doctor of Business Administration (D.B.A.) (Honoris Causa), while Akinwumi Adesina was conferred with the Honorary Doctorate Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D.) (Honoris Causa). This recognition highlights their outstanding contributions to their respective fields.
The convocation ceremony also celebrated the academic achievements of 17,420 students, comprising 10,967 undergraduates and 6,413 postgraduates. Notably, 40 students graduated with PhDs, and 51 students from correctional centers received degrees, showcasing the university’s commitment to education and rehabilitation.
NOUN’s Vice Chancellor emphasized the institution’s deployment of technology in teaching and learning, as well as improvements in infrastructure, research funding, and delivery systems. These reforms have led to remarkable growth and a significant increase in student enrollment.
As part of the ceremony, Adesina delivered the 14th Convocation Lecture, themed “Advancing Africa’s Positioning within Global Development and Geopolitical Dynamics.” His address provided insights into Africa’s evolving role in international affairs and economic progress.

Speaker Abbas has been an advocate for technical and vocational education, emphasizing its importance in Nigeria’s development. He also highlighted the need for improved literacy skills among African women, with 60% lacking basic literacy.
The university’s convocation ceremony was held in a hybrid format, accommodating both on-site and off-site participants. This approach ensures broad participation and celebrates the academic achievements of students from diverse backgrounds.
The 51 students from correctional centers who received degrees demonstrate NOUN’s commitment to rehabilitation and education. This initiative provides opportunities for individuals to improve their lives and contribute to society.
As President of the African Development Bank Group, Adesina has been instrumental in promoting economic development and cooperation in Africa. His honorary doctorate degree from NOUN recognizes his contributions to the continent’s growth.
