Super Eagles goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka has been suspended from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following allegations of insider betting.
In a letter signed by NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi on Tuesday, 5 August 2025, Adeyinka’s registration with the league was put on hold pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation. The sanction comes after his club, Plateau United FC, accused him of involvement in betting activities during the 2024/2025 season.
According to the NPFL, Adeyinka reportedly refused to sign a contract with a new club because it contained a clause for immediate termination in cases of betting offences. The league management said this raised serious concerns and strengthened the allegations against him.
Article 15.5 section B of the NPFL Framework and Rules prohibits players from betting, with offenders facing sanctions under section C. The statement warned that betting on games a player is involved in damages the integrity of the league and brings the sport into disrepute.
Adewale Adeyinka, who has represented Nigeria at youth level and received senior national team call-ups, will be invited to defend himself as the investigation continues. His suspension is a setback to a potential move to Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), who were reportedly close to securing his signature ahead of the new NPFL season starting on 22 August.
If cleared, his registration may be reinstated, but for now, his immediate football future remains uncertain.
