NSCDC Apprehends Suspected Power Cable Vandals

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Akwa Ibom State has made significant strides in combating vandalism by arresting five individuals accused of damaging power installations, including high-tension cables.

Yesterday, NSCDC Commandant Mr. Bashar Hussaini addressed reporters, revealing that the suspects had confessed to their involvement in the crime.

They detailed how they carefully monitored the electricity supply, waiting until it was turned off before proceeding with their operation. Using ladders, they climbed to cut the high-tension cables, demonstrating a calculated approach to their illegal activities.

The suspects were apprehended while actively vandalizing the cables at the border between Ikot Obio Ekpong and Ikot Ekong village, thanks to vigilant members of the local community who reported their suspicious behavior.

This collaboration between law enforcement and residents highlights the importance of community vigilance in preventing crime. The NSCDC praised the community’s involvement, emphasizing that public cooperation is crucial in the fight against vandalism and other criminal acts.

In addition to the damage at Ikot Obio Ekpong and Ikot Ekong, the suspects were also linked to similar incidents in Atanuk, a nearby village. The scale of vandalism in the region raises concerns about the reliability of the electricity supply and the safety of residents, as power interruptions can affect daily life and economic activities.

The arrested individuals include Uchenna Uguru, who allegedly purchased the stolen cables, and three others—Emmanuel Sampson, Victor Sampson, and Kingsley Umoren—who are accused of physically vandalizing the infrastructure.

Joseph Emmanuel, who acted as the motorcycle rider for the group, was also taken into custody.

Authorities recovered three bundles of high-tension cables and a motorcycle used in the crime during the arrests. These items serve as evidence of the criminal activities taking place and are crucial for ongoing investigations.

Mr. Hussaini expressed deep concern regarding the increasing rate of vandalism targeting public infrastructure, particularly power installations, which are vital for the community’s well-being.

The NSCDC is committed to tackling this issue head-on. Mr. Hussaini reiterated that the organization would enhance its efforts to protect public utilities through increased surveillance and collaboration with local communities.

He called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, stressing that collective action is essential in ensuring the security of vital infrastructure.

The recent arrests signify a proactive approach by the NSCDC in addressing the serious issue of vandalism in Akwa Ibom State.
