The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that a NURTW official beats dispatch rider to death on Tapa Street, Lagos Island. Police identified the suspect as Shamsideen Adio, a known member of the union, and arrested him immediately after the incident.
The clash started when the dispatch rider allegedly scratched Adio’s vehicle. Instead of resolving the matter peacefully, Adio engaged in a heated fight. Consequently, he and his colleagues allegedly descended on the rider, inflicting severe injuries that led to his death.
Journalist Chris Nwandu, who shared a video of the incident on Facebook, described Adio as notorious for violence. According to him, the NURTW official beats dispatch rider without remorse and has also attacked tricycle operators in Lagos Island.
“A popular Lagos Island NURTW top official mercilessly beat a dispatch rider for obstructing his way,” Nwandu explained. He further alleged that a tricycle operator recently landed in a general hospital after suffering a similar beating from Adio.
Meanwhile, a police officer confirmed that the rider died from the injuries sustained in the attack. He emphasized that investigators had already transferred Adio to the State Criminal Investigation Department for prosecution.
“The suspect is now in custody at the State CID, and investigations are ongoing,” the officer stated.
Therefore, the incident has triggered outrage among Lagos residents. Many demanded accountability and urged the authorities to place stricter checks on NURTW members. In response, the Lagos Police Command assured the public that justice would prevail and that the case would not be swept under the carpet..
