The Federal Government of Nigeria has recently given the green light for an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, raising it to ₦77,000.
This increase comes on the heels of the enactment of the new minimum wage bill, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of its youth.
The approval regarding the enhanced allowance was communicated through a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission.
This letter, dated September 25, 2024, was signed by the Commission’s Chairman, Ekpo Nta, and it aligns with the provisions of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act of 2024.
Despite this positive development, corps members were disappointed to find that the new allowance was not reflected in their September payments. This oversight has sparked concern and confusion among the corps members regarding the implementation of the new rates.
In addressing this issue, the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, provided insight into the delay. He explained that the necessary funds to effect the new allowance have not yet been released by the government, which has impeded the payment process.
Speaking during an interview with Journalists on Saturday, October 5, 2024, he stated, “Not only corps members, but even our staff members’ salaries were increased about four to five months ago, but this has not yet been implemented. We are hopeful that the new pay will be implemented soon, though the funds have not yet been released to us.”
Brigadier General Ahmed further elaborated on the situation, mentioning that while the salaries of NYSC staff were raised several months ago, this increase has yet to be put into effect.
He indicated that although the specifics regarding when the new allowance would be disbursed remain unclear, there is confidence that the monthly allowance for corps members will eventually be adjusted, as it has been officially increased from July 29, 2024.
To provide additional context, it is noteworthy that President Bola Tinubu signed the new Minimum Wage Bill into law on July 29, 2024, establishing a minimum wage of ₦70,000 for Nigerian workers.
This legislative change is aimed at improving the living standards of workers across the nation, particularly in light of the rising cost of living.
As corps members await the release of funds and the corresponding adjustment in their allowances, there is a palpable sense of anticipation within the NYSC community.
The hope is that these changes will be implemented promptly, thereby enhancing the financial well-being of those serving their country.
