President Trump’s reproach of the Olympic opening ceremony creative team coincided with the critiques leveled by Catholic groups and French bishops, who took exception to a specific scene in the ceremony featuring dancers, drag queens, and a DJ that seemed to allude to the Last Supper, despite the creators’ insistence that no such resemblance was intended.
The controversial sequence sparked widespread criticism from Christian organizations and conservative politicians on social media. When asked about his potential plans for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles if he were to be reelected president, Trump stated that a similar portrayal to that of the Paris ceremony would not be permitted. In response to the backlash, the director of the opening ceremony, Thomas Jolly, clarified that his intention was to promote reconciliation and healing through the production.
