In a significant political shift, several members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as the state prepares for the governorship election scheduled for November 16. This move marks a notable development in the run-up to the election, reflecting ongoing changes in political alliances in the region.
The defectors made their transition official at a rally held at the SDP’s secretariat in Akure. During the event, they returned their APC membership cards and were given new cards from the SDP. The switch was accompanied by a public demonstration of their new allegiance, signaling a strategic realignment as the election draws near.
Femi Ikoyi, the leader of the defecting group, shared their reasons for leaving the APC. He stated that the former members felt they had been treated unfairly within the party. Ikoyi, who led the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) within the APC, expressed dissatisfaction with the local handling of party matters.
“We are moving from APC to SDP because of the lack of fair treatment at the local level,” Ikoyi explained. “We believe that the SDP candidate, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, has strong support and is well-positioned to win the election.”
Ikoyi further mentioned that their shift to the SDP is part of a broader strategy to consolidate support and ensure victory for their new candidate. He indicated that additional members from both the APC and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are also considering joining the SDP, aiming to strengthen the party’s position in the upcoming election.
Gbenga Akinbunmi, the Chairman of the Ondo State SDP, welcomed the new members and assured them of fair treatment within the party. He emphasized that the SDP is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all its members. Akinbunmi’s assurance was aimed at reinforcing the party’s reputation as a fair and progressive political force.
The SDP’s governorship candidate, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, also addressed the defectors, congratulating them on their decision to join the party. Akingboye promised an inclusive approach to governance if elected, stressing his commitment to addressing the concerns of all Ondo State residents.
This political realignment reflects the dynamic nature of party politics in Nigeria and underscores the strategic moves being made as parties and candidates prepare for the upcoming governorship election. The entrance of former APC members into the SDP could influence the electoral landscape and contribute to the shaping of future political developments in Ondo State.
