The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the accreditation of 112 media organizations to cover the upcoming Ondo governorship election on November 16.
This media presence will bring over 700 journalists, technicians, and support staff from print, radio, television, and digital platforms to Ondo State, underscoring the Commission’s commitment to transparent coverage of the electoral process.
The announcement was made by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, during a quarterly consultative meeting with media organizations in Abuja on Friday.
Professor Yakubu expressed the Commission’s appreciation for the media’s critical role in sustaining democratic integrity, especially in challenging periods such as elections. “The Commission is glad to announce the accreditation of 112 national and international media organizations,” he stated.
He highlighted that the details of each media organization and their respective personnel will soon be available on INEC’s website and social media channels. This transparency aims to foster trust and ensure comprehensive, unbiased coverage for the Ondo polls.
Yakubu also called on media professionals to support peace and stability through accurate and responsible reporting. “I appeal to the media to intensify your accurate reportage that will ensure peaceful elections, especially as campaigns by political parties and candidates are in full swing,” he noted. He urged journalists to serve as a “counterforce against fake news, misinformation, and disinformation” that could otherwise disrupt the election’s integrity.
The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo, also emphasized the importance of journalist safety and press freedom as foundational to Nigeria’s democracy. “We urge security agencies to take proactive steps to guarantee the safety of media professionals, especially in light of the intensified threats and heightened risks that journalists face in today’s environment,” Isiguzo said. He underscored the need to protect journalists from harassment and intimidation, particularly during high-stakes elections like the one in Ondo State.
Both INEC and NUJ leadership reiterated their commitment to safeguarding democratic values through a free press. With the Ondo election fast approaching, media organizations will play a pivotal role in ensuring the public receives timely and accurate information, while security agencies are expected to take measures to protect journalists on duty, reinforcing a safe environment for all stakeholders.
