Senator Ajibola Basiru, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has denied allegations that the ruling party is working towards creating a one-party state in Nigeria.
In a television appearance, Basiru defended the APC’s operations, dismissing allegations of state-sponsored intimidation aimed at opposition parties.
Basiru’s remarks come in the wake of significant defections from opposition parties, with prominent political figures such as Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy Monday Onyeme, and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa joining the APC.

When asked about the growing perception that the APC and the current government are consolidating power to diminish opposition influence, Basiru questioned, “How can we turn Nigeria into a one-party state? The country is not our making. The policies of the country are not our making.”
He further criticized opposition parties for their lack of seriousness, stating, “The problem with Nigeria is that we don’t seem to have people who are serious in opposition. You cannot expect the ruling party to do the work of the opposition.”
Basiru emphasized that the APC’s strength lies in its commitment to building a strong, grassroots political structure throughout Nigeria.
He challenged the media to assess whether opposition parties are actively working to strengthen their organizations, as opposed to the APC’s continuous efforts to expand its presence across the country.
He also referenced the APC’s resilience during its time in opposition, mentioning figures like Bola Tinubu, who continued to expand the party despite facing political challenges and scrutiny.

In response to ongoing criticisms about the party’s dominance, Basiru called for more constructive political engagement. He suggested that the opposition should rise to the challenge and offer viable alternatives to the APC’s policies instead of focusing solely on criticism.
Basiru also noted that the APC’s growth and influence are a reflection of the people’s trust in its vision for the country’s future. He stated that the party is dedicated to addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic issues and ensuring that every Nigerian benefits from its governance.
