Chris Onwuzurike, the father figure of Nigerian sprinter Udodi Onwuzurike, is astounded by the caliber of the AFN National Trials at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City and envisions Nigeria emerging as a dominant force in global athletics within the next three years.
The proud patriarch, currently present in Benin City to witness what is colloquially referred to as the Nigerian Olympics, shared this sentiment following his son’s impressive performance in the men’s 200m event. Udodi, a native of Michigan and the United States excels in the 200m discipline and achieved the fastest time in the first heat, clocking in at 20.68 seconds on a Tuesday morning.
He remarked, “The forthcoming prospects appear to hold immense promise, given the burgeoning enthusiasm and fervor evident at the trials. The increasing participation of individuals, particularly youngsters and adolescents, bodes well for the future of athletics in our nation.
“Upon contemplating the trajectory for the subsequent three to five years, it is conceivable that Nigeria could emerge as a formidable contender alongside the likes of the US and Jamaica in this domain of athletics. The burgeoning talent pool signifies a wealth of potential, and the pivotal task lies in effectively nurturing and harnessing these resources. The onus is on the AFN and the nation at large to ensure optimal cultivation of this burgeoning talent. A growing number of both local and foreign-born athletes are beginning to embrace our athletic culture and actively engage in our sporting endeavors.”
He further expressed, “Udodi is well-prepared, and one must acknowledge the arduous journey he has traversed this year, transitioning from collegiate competition, changing coaching staff, and contending with injuries. Merely a month into his return to competitive running, he is striving to regain his momentum. Few athletes could attain his current level of performance amidst the myriad challenges he has encountered, including coaching transitions and nearly a year of injury-induced hiatus. Witnessing his resolute determination to excel fills me with pride, and we eagerly anticipate his podium finish in the upcoming 200-meter race.”
Udodi, who clinched the gold medal at the World Athletics U-20 Championships in 2021, currently represents Stanford University at the collegiate level and is an esteemed graduate of Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
