Government employees in Oyo State are set to receive an N80,000 minimum wage beginning January 2025. The agreement between the state government and organized labor, announced by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, ensures a significant salary increment for workers. The agreement, signed by top government officials, labor leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress, and the Trade Union Congress, stipulates that the salary adjustment is effective nominally from July 2024, with financial implementation in January 2025.
Retiring workers between July and December 2024 will also benefit, as their retirement benefits will be calculated using the new wage structure. The Commissioner urged ministries and departments to enhance revenue generation to support the state’s financial commitments, highlighting the N6 billion monthly salary expenditure.
Oyo State, a top employer in Nigeria, annually spends over N77 billion on salaries. Despite this, Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration has consistently ensured workers receive their traditional 13th-month salary, a practice sustained since 2019.
The announcement marks another milestone in Makinde’s labor-friendly administration. Workers are expected to end 2024 with the bonus while beginning the new year with increased wages, reinforcing the government’s commitment to enhancing employee welfare.
