Supporters of Olumide Akpata, the gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party, have vehemently criticized the recent remarks made by the Oba of Benin, HRH Ewuare II, questioning Akpata’s assertion of being a descendant of the Palace.
Tensions heightened when Akpata visited the Oba’s Palace on Saturday, accompanied by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
During his visit, Akpata discussed his connection to the Palace, prompting the Oba to clarify that while Akpata is highly regarded in the community, he is not a direct heir of the Palace.
In light of Oba’s statement, supporters of the Labour Party took to various social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Nairaland, to express their indignation.
Numerous comments rebuked the Oba’s statements as disrespectful and accused him of diminishing Akpata’s status.
“One supporter lamented on Twitter, “I am disheartened by the Oba’s lack of regard for our candidate. Akpata has demonstrated unwavering dedication to Benin, and this is how he is treated.”
Another supporter on Facebook wrote, “The Oba should concentrate on upholding tradition, not engaging in politics. Akpata is a native of Benin, and we are in full support of him.”
Nevertheless, not all comments were critical. Some recognized the Oba’s responsibility to preserve tradition and honoring the lineage of the Palace.
In response to the backlash, Akpata himself released a statement denouncing any disrespectful behavior towards the esteemed Oba of Benin.
“I unequivocally reject any offensive comments or actions directed at the revered Oba of Benin,” Akpata declared.
However, a traditional chief from Benin, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed disappointment in Akpata’s initial assertion. “Akpata went too far by claiming association with the Palace. Such assertions must be based on facts and conveyed with respect.”
With the Edo gubernatorial election scheduled for September 21, 2024, this incident has introduced additional tension into the political arena.
Campaign efforts are anticipated to heighten in the upcoming months, potentially influenced by the repercussions of this situation.
