The Plateau State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has downplayed the recent wave of defections from the party, describing them as temporary setbacks. The party expressed confidence that it will soon emerge stronger, more united, and more determined ahead of future political engagements.

Outgoing State Chairman of the PDP, Chris Hassan, made this known during a valedictory press briefing held at the party’s secretariat in Jos. The event, which had members of the State Executive Committee in attendance, was part of activities preceding the upcoming state congress.

PDP Leadership Pledges Unity and Support for Governor Mutfwang

Hassan urged party members to remain steadfast in promoting PDP’s ideals and supporting Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration. According to him, the governor’s leadership has raised the bar in governance, infrastructure development, peacebuilding, and accountability.

“As we prepare to hand over, I assure our supporters that our commitment to the PDP and to Governor Caleb Mutfwang remains steadfast,” he said. “The governor’s leadership has set a new standard in governance, and we will continue to support his efforts to move the state forward.”

Party Records Gains Despite Legal Setbacks

Reflecting on his tenure, Hassan said he had no regrets leading the party back to power after eight years of All Progressives Congress (APC) control. He highlighted the PDP’s success in the 2023 general elections, which produced the governor, two senators, five members of the House of Representatives, and 16 members of the State House of Assembly.

“We have no regrets returning the PDP to power, and the current administration under the party is doing well,” he added.
However, he lamented that the court rulings nullifying some of the party’s victories denied duly elected representatives the opportunity to serve their constituents.

Appreciation for the Media and Stakeholders

Hassan also commended the media for their “consistent support and professional commitment,” noting that journalists gave the PDP “the visibility and voice it needed” during his administration. He thanked party members and stakeholders for their cooperation throughout his tenure.

The outgoing chairman reiterated that the PDP in Plateau remains focused on strengthening internal unity and building on its achievements. He described Governor Mutfwang’s leadership as “a model for peace, development, and accountability.”
