The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its position that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is incapable of inciting a crisis in Rivers State and then benefiting from it by invoking a state of emergency.
Debo Ologunagba, the national spokesperson of the primary opposition party, made this assertion in response to the demand by the state chapter of the APC for the federal government to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State.
The interim chairman of the APC in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, issued the request on Wednesday, claiming that the state is embroiled in conflict.
“Rivers State is in a state of conflict. The main actors responsible for the violence that has resulted in loss of life are identifiable.
“The Governor and the police are powerless. Consequently, the APC in Rivers State is advocating for a state of emergency in Rivers State as a means of quelling the violence and unrest prevailing in the state. I urge the federal government to take prompt action in this regard,” he expressed.
However, in a conversation with the Nigerian Tribune over the phone, the national publicist of the PDP cautioned the APC to desist from their deceitful tactics.
“The APC is not permitted to surreptitiously assume control of the government of Rivers State. They are prohibited from orchestrating violence or turmoil similar to that,” he emphasized.
