The internal PDP crisis took a dramatic twist after 11 National Working Committee members opposed Senator Anyanwu’s reinstatement.
Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum had announced the controversial reinstatement at a press briefing earlier on Wednesday.
He also stated that the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting slated for June 30 had been postponed indefinitely.
However, hours later, 11 prominent NWC members challenged Damagum’s authority to make such sensitive party-altering pronouncements.
They issued a joint statement rejecting both the NEC postponement and Senator Anyanwu’s return as National Secretary.
The signatories included Deputy National Chairman South, National Treasurer, Auditor, Publicity Secretary, and other top-ranking party figures.
They emphasized that no individual or organ can override NEC decisions under the 2017-amended PDP Constitution framework.
In their words, only the NEC—second to the National Convention—is empowered to approve such significant internal decisions.
They cited Section 31(3), stating the June 30 NEC meeting remains valid and cannot be cancelled unilaterally.
The members described Damagum’s action as unconstitutional, misleading, and an affront to the party’s democratic structure.
They also refuted any legitimate directive instructing Anyanwu to resume office, calling it null and misleading.
Former Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan condemned Damagum’s remarks targeting current spokesman Debo Ologunagba as disrespectful.
He accused Damagum of undermining both NEC authority and the collective credibility of the National Working Committee members.
This latest development adds fuel to the already tense PDP crisis, just days before the key NEC meeting.
Observers now await the party’s next move amid rising tension and uncertainty within the opposition’s top leadership.
Unless resolved swiftly, this PDP crisis could further fracture the party ahead of important political decisions and events.
