The PDP chairman warns defectors that many former members who joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) are being sidelined. Abayomi Tella said these politicians are treated as outsiders because they did not participate in the APC’s earlier political struggles.
Tella explained that politicians who left the Peoples Democratic Party face limitations in the APC. According to him, defectors are often overlooked and remain “onlookers” in the ruling party.
He highlighted several defectors, including the immediate past PDP state chairman Sikirulai Ogundele and the former deputy governorship candidate. All moved to the APC in July 2025. The PDP chairman warns defectors that their departure does not guarantee political influence in their new party.
“Most of our members who went to the APC have become onlookers. They were not part of their system from day one. When APC members worked for victory, the defectors were absent. So they remain outsiders,” Tella said.
PDP Ready to Reclaim Leaders
Despite this warning, Tella said the PDP remains open to welcoming prominent politicians back. He mentioned Governor Dapo Abiodun, Senator Gbenga Daniel, and former Governor Ibikunle Amosun. If any fail to secure APC tickets, they can return to PDP.
He added that the ongoing rift between Abiodun and Daniel offers an opportunity for the PDP to strengthen its position.
“We will explore areas where the PDP can gain from this rift. Abiodun, OGD, and Amosun are welcome back. Bringing them into the PDP strengthens our party,” he said.
Tella emphasized that the PDP is resilient and deeply rooted. Despite challenges, the party continues to grow and unite members.
“The PDP cannot die. Even if challenged today, it will rise tomorrow. We are committed to keeping our people together,” he said.
The PDP chairman warns defectors repeatedly throughout the interview, reinforcing that loyalty to the party and its foundation matters.
