Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to prioritize skill acquisition programs for inmates across Nigeria’s correctional facilities. Obi emphasized that such initiatives would not only rehabilitate inmates but also transform them into productive contributors to society.
Speaking during a visit to the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Onitsha on Christmas Day, Obi emphasized the importance of equipping inmates, particularly the youth, with essential skills to aid their reintegration into society. He noted that the establishment of operational skill acquisition programs in some facilities, such as the one in Onitsha, serves as a model for rehabilitation efforts.
“This effort will rehabilitate our brothers and sisters undergoing correction and prepare them to lead more positive lives, contributing meaningfully to societal growth,” Obi shared in a post on his X account.
During his visit, Obi commended Archbishop Valerian Okeke, who has been instrumental in the rehabilitation efforts at the Onitsha Correctional Centre. The facility now boasts a fully operational Skill Acquisition Centre, enabling inmates to gain vocational skills. Additionally, the centre allows inmates to take their National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) exams, a step toward formal education and certification.
Obi also praised the National Open University of Nigeria for establishing a study centre within the correctional facility, describing education as a cornerstone for national development. He urged the government to replicate these initiatives across all correctional facilities in the country.
“I deeply appreciate Archbishop Okeke for his consistent and immeasurable contributions to the welfare of inmates and the broader society. The government should expand such positive developments to other facilities nationwide,” Obi added.
The former Anambra State governor reaffirmed his belief in human development through education and skill acquisition, underscoring their potential to rehabilitate and reintegrate inmates effectively.
